about a year ago.. i was invited to join a campaign names as MS Walk..
as i was diagnosed to have MS somewhat in 2008.
Which first started in December 2007, i was suspected to have it after doing all sort of analysis to confirm it, including lumber punture and MRI.
My mum (who is a doctor) and my sister who was at that time a medical student, refuse to believe it was MS.
Apprently, this common disease overseas are not well heard of in this home country..
At first when i heard of the disease i was like, why it can't be MS. There's nothing wrong with having MS.. rite..?
Hmm.. so, because of the refusal, the doctor who attended me ok, we'll see for 6 months time. I will be given some medication to fight some 'worm' in the brain..
so for that first 6 months in 2008, i was eating worm-medication.. and i learned to be tentively 'hygenic' which i carried until today.. some good part of it.. i guess..
and then in the break in mid 2008(june i think) after the exam, i went back home to do another MRI, and tadaa!.. its now confirmed i have MS...
but i still thought there's nothing wrong having MS at that time...
Oh, in early 6 months before, i actually experience some symtoms with the numbness of both of my fingers and one of my housemate back then was a medic student, which i consulted her.. and can't do anything bout it..
So when i came back to my study place, and when i told few of my friends here i have MS, they were very inspired to look it up in the web, what MS it.. because myself at that time could not explain it to them as i dont exactly know what MS is...
only after that, i found myself to actually know what MS is.. and i search and search for it in the web..
surprisingly, its a common disease in Aussie but not in Msia..
and today, i found the call to write on MS.. well, what i think i know of..
well, there are many information about MS in the current easily access and well spread media, the internet..
so, one might not clearly undestand what im ranting here..
MS.. is a abbreviation for Multiple Sclerosis..
Sclerosis is something generally defined as pathological hardening or thickening of tissue..
And in our brain, there are nerves which react as a path for each body part to transmit message to the brain to give certain reaction needed. These nerves are protected by a sheath called myelin. This myelin act as a protective covering to ensure the message flow thru it arrive to the right destination without any distruption to it.
Its just like our everyday wire in our electric kettle, our electric iron and even the computer your facing on, it will only work if it get the messange from the Plug. Message we known as electric. If there is any damage to the protective coverings of the wire (usually made of rubber), we could either get electric shock if we touch it and our electric items will not be on.
A simple example, when the hand accidently touch a burning stove, the hand will quickly transmit message of this accident to the brain and the brain will interpret it as HOT, and will return a feedback message to the hand to remove it from the burning stove. If the process of transmitting messages did not occur, the hand will be badly burnt without the person realising it, as there was no warning from the Brain to the Hand to remove it.
So, when sclerosis occur in the brain, it distrupt the nerve by demilishing the myelin, the message could not be transmit successfully. This is when the central nerves system is distrupted from working.
And the disease is know as Multiple Sclerosis because there will be numerous of sclerosis occur in the brain and spinal cord.. not just 1 or 2, depending on the well being of the person..
There are several types of MS, where each type depends on the severity of the disease and the it activeness.
i) Relapsing-Remitting MS
ii)Primary Progressive MS
iii)Secondary Progressive MS
iv) Progressive relapsing MS
A person could change from a type of MS to the other, depending on how its MS course goes on after several yeas, roughly 5 years...
Some patients begins with just a minor symptoms and will then degrade further until it involve such as the need of wheelchair to walk.
